UN declared 2010 as the International Youth Year
On 20th November, 2009 the UNGA’s Third Committee passed by consensus a resolution tabled by the G-77 and China, proclaiming 2010 as the International Year of Youth: Dialogue and Mutual Understanding. As time is a key factor in preparing for such commitments such as International Year, the resolution sets the 12 August 2010 as the commencement of this particular international year. 2010 also will mark the 25th Anniversary of the International Year of Youth:
Participation, Development and Peace.
While each member state is encouraged to dedicate the year to youth, there are already events planned for 2010. The 5th World Youth Congress will be held in Istanbul, Turkey from the 31st July – 13th August.
There is also a World Youth Congress to be held in Mexico City from 24th-27th August, 2010. Singapore will also be hosting the Inaugural Youth Olympic Games from 14th-26th August. A separate World Youth Congress under the auspices of the UN is also planned and the resolution requests the President of the GA to conduct open-ended consultations with member states on this matter.
Youth in all member states are encouraged to press onto their national governments and civil societies the need to further promote youth
Involvement in the decision making process with this as its platform.
It is also a great opportunity for the promotion of the youth delegate program in member states that currently do not include them in their national delegations.
